Birdhouses - Build One

Building a birdhouse isn't all that hard. You can start from a kit, or with 7 pieces of wood. You'll need a hammer and nails - or a screwdriver and screws, a hinge, some hooks, and a drill with a wide-diameter bit.
Start with the wood. It should not be treated, and should be bare. No arsenic impregnated wood and no creosote-soaked wood. Start with the floor. You need it to be at a good size for the bird you are hoping to attract. Research what you need for a specific bird. Otherwise, six inches by six inches is a good place to start.
Next, attach the sides to the outer part of the base. Nail the sides into the thickness of the base. The front and the back are the most complicated parts. They should be uneven pentagons - and have that "house" shape to them. In the front panel you will need to drill an opening to the birdhouse. It should be 1.5" or less in diameter for most songbirds. If there is a specific songbird that you want to attract, then you should research the exact size of the hole that is needed. Attach the front and back onto the sides and base.
Look inside the birdhouse. Are there any nails or screws poking through to the inside? These could hurt the baby birds. So reposition them if necessary.
Next, you attach the roof. The two boards are not of the same size. Attach one board to the sloped sides of the front and back panels. Nail or screw it together. Its edge should be flush with the sloped sides of the roof. Once it is in place, attach a hinge to the top of it. Attach the second roof panel to the hinge. Do not nail this panel into place.
On the front and on the back, attach hooks. From there you can string your birdhouse so that it hangs. At this point you can paint the outside of the birdhouse however you like.
Now, you see that you have finished your birdhouse. Not that hard, was it?
