If you, like me, are tired of spending gas, money and time tracking down expensive organic produce that isn't always available in the variety you might like and isn't always the freshest by the time you find it then perhaps an outdoor or indoor hydroponic garden is for you.
A small inexpensive hydroponics system can grow and keep available a large variety of delicious nutritious herbs and vegetables to help feed your family every day and also to help out in time of unexpected or (heaven forbid) catastrophic events.
A hydroponics system is an easy and clean way to garden. Most systems are so efficient that little effort on your part is required. Just set it up, plug into electricity for the pump and lights to work, add nutrients to the water in the reservoir and keep the water at the proper level.
Then all you have to do is stand or sit back, watch those veggies grow and enjoy letting the hydroponics system and lighting do most of the work for you.
There are the smaller systems for your salad greens and herbs, medium sized systems for garden vegetables and there are the larger systems for growing berries, taller vegetables or fruit trees.
So wherever your tastes and interests lie there is a hydroponic system that is just right for you and a way for you to grow just about whatever you like indoors or outdoors hydroponically.
The hydroponics systems are relatively inexpensive and easy to get online and come with plenty of instructions and how-to guidance.
You could get started for under or around $200.00 for both lighting and hydroponics system.
The systems come as a complete kit with everything you need to get started: everything, that is, except the lights.
And probably the most important thing for growing the best herbs and vegetables is the right grow lights.
If you are just starting off with your first hydroponics system and plan to set it up on a table or flat surface I would highly recommend a Jump Start Light System, by Hydrofarm, which is portable and comes in either a 2 ft or 4 ft size.
Their cost is under or around the $75.00 mark and includes a T5 Fluorescent bulb known for its ability to simulate the sun and which can emit enough lumens to help your young seedlings get off to a great start to grow lush and strong.
There is also a video on You Tube to show you how to set it up.
Just think of the adventure of it all!
If you have children, they'll delight in taking an active roll in the vegetable or fruit growing project. They can help with the setting up and pH testing to add the proper amounts of nutrients and water.
Who will see the first blossoms?
Who will pick the first delicious veggie?
Who will get to eat them?
And perhaps there will be a hydroponics essay and/or science project in your child's near future.
But that's a whole other story for another time.
