That is how I think a lot of people will be acquiring there bonsais in the present day. Which I have come to find out is a great idea. Most bonsais that have come from the internet have been trained for the customer. Most are grown to be given as gifts or decorations, which means pruning, watering, fertilizing, and occasional transplants are made easier to keep treee alive.
Although the internet is easy, affordable and relatively fast, a nursery is also a great idea. When searching on the internet you get a brief description, but you do not get a feel for your tree until it hits your door step. While a nursery you can see the size of bonsais. If it is a flowering tree you can see them bloom or smell the fragrance it gives off. Most likely there are trees in different stages of growth so its owner can train and make it their own piece of art. Usually an employee can help answer your questions or give you a detailed description on growing bonsais. Needless to say you get to choose a bonsai that you know you will love and grow with.
If you think about how growing bonsais originated, you have to realize they did not come from a nursery and they certainly did not come from the internet. Someone went out found a tree that was not even close to full grown and kept it miniature. They trained it to be small so they could transfer from one location to another easily. Keeping that in mind, you should be able to do the same thing. Go for a hike find a baby tree and transfer to a bonsai pot. It sounds easy but this takes skill, and a lot of practice. This also trains you to be more patient. There is something meditative about this technique. When you are out on your hike do not forget to gather some seeds and attempt to start from the beginning. Although this procedure obviously takes the longest, it the most rewarding. There is nothing like watching your baby grow.
The last techniques of getting a bonsai around your home would be layering or grafting bonsais. These techniques are more advanced. A lot of reading will be done for someone to learn this on their own. You can layer bonsai trees by supplying an adequate amount of nutrients to a part the branch, which makes that part of the branch grow. In return a new tree is made. Simply cut off the branch and plant the roots. Grafting is another technique that takes knowledge. This technique involves two trees being fused together to make one. For example, say you one tree with strong roots but bad fruit, and another with weak roots but great fruit. To graft make cuts in both trees, adding the great fruit to the strong roots making one great tree. Your rewards come a lot faster with this technique but there is not much room for error.
