A description of a woman in a glamour magazine? No, they're just a few of the many species of the pink rose, a variety of flower that belongs to a larger bunch of botanical wonders called pink flowers. But for now we're not going to study the types of pink flowers (which are hundreds) or their origins (which may take us back to pre-historic Greece). What I'm going to talk about is how pink flowers differ from other flowers and what they can do for you, if you'll make these loveliest of flowers a part of your daily experience.
First, pink flowers are different because even a glimpse of them elicits positive emotions. Pink is a soothing color; it evokes calmness. It is universally equated with tenderness, innocence, and gentility. When you think pink you think of pleasant thoughts, wholesome thoughts. You can't think ill or other when a vase of pink flowers is right before your eyes - their beauty and fragrance can enliven your mood and brighten you up.
Second, pink is the flower of choice among celebrities, royalties, first ladies, nurseries, flower growers, florists - people who know flowers more than the rest of us. For example, actress Grace Kelly's marriage to Monaco's Prince Rainier in 1956 inspired the creation of the elegant pink rose, "Grace of Monaco". Another is the "Queen Elizabeth Rose", named after England's matriarch. Still another, the "First Lady Rose", hit the market in 1961 in honor of American First Lady Jacqueline Kennnedy. A few more famous names include Dorothy Perkins, Charlotte Armstrong, Duchesse de Brabant, Jeanne Lajoie, and yes, the "glamour girl" in our introduction, Kathryn Morley.
Having known the good that pink flowers can do for us, it would be wise to adorn our homes or work places with a vase or two of pink flowers. The benefits we get from them make their presence a daily necessity.
So what to do? Since nowadays it's quite expensive to buy pink flowers on a regular basis, I suggest growing them in your own garden. Before embarking on this enterprise, it helps to remember some important points:
- For all types of flowers, cultivate, fertilize, water, and drain the soil well before planting. Mix some compost or peat moss with the soil. Fertilize once a month.
- For pink roses and most other types like the dahlia, geranium and begonia, plant in full sun or partial shade.
- Buy some gardening tools. You'll need a spade, pruner, water hose and watering wand, garden knife and garden shears.
There are flowers here, flowers there, and flowers everywhere. But there is one kind that pleases the eye, and fills the heart with joy like no other flower. There is one that can easily turn your weak and tired body into the "pink of health". And there finally is one flower that has the power to entertain, to "tickle you pink": pink flowers.
